About Shift Training
Our trainers are adventure lovers..
Shift Training provides valuable towing and caravan safety tips from new drivers to experienced caravaners needing a refresher.. These private courses (or in small groups) cater for customers seeking to tow with confidence. You have the option to use your own van and vehicle or ours. If your own vehicle is used, a full safety setup check is conducted and feedback provided to the customer.
We also cater for those who need extra help the use of a spotter, correct van set up, weight distribution, backing and securing.
Shift can create a customised training plan to suit your requirements, just tell us what you need and we'll sort out the details.
Course Options
Option 1.
Theory Only $295 (2 participants)
Our Theory Only course is an ideal for all caravaners whether you're new or experienced.
Course Outline:
- 2 hours theory training
- Correct connection / disconnection procedures
- Reversing and use of a spotter
- Brake set up, brake controller adjustment, manual override
- Understanding tow vehicle and caravan weights
- Safe and defensive driving techniques
Option 2.
Practical Towing Only $295 (2 participants)
Our Practical Towing Only course is an ideal refresher for people with some prior towing experience or for employees who are required to tow a trailer for work purposes.
It is preferred that participants bring their own insured towing vehicle and caravan or trailer.
An option to use one of our vehicles and caravan or trailer is available at an extra cost. ($120)
Course Outline:
- 2 hours practical training
- Welcome and introduction
- Demonstration of correct coupling including selection and application of accessories
- Predominantly practical training in reversing and parking techniques
- Development of practical techniques including hazard awareness to ensure safe handling of a tow vehicle
- How to use a spotter
- Hill starts demonstrating braking to avoid rollback
- Use of electric brake control
- Course Times: Times and dates to suit
Option 3.
Full Towing Course $495 (2 participants) SPECIAL $395
This full course is ideal for everyone who tows a trailer, caravan or horse float. This course is designed to teach practical towing skills plus legal and safety requirements when towing.
This course is conducted at our site and on highways and local roads.
It is preferred that participants bring their own insured towing vehicle and caravan or trailer.
An option to use one of our vehicles and caravan or trailer is available at an extra cost. ($120)
Course Outline:
Options 1 and 2 plus
- Correct connection / disconnection procedures
- Monitored forward towing and straight reversing
- Circle reverse, reverse angle parking
- Brake set up, brake controller adjustment, manual override
- Question time, completion of paperwork
- A Certificate of completion will be awarded at the completion of training
- Course Times: 8am - 12pm
- Training every Saturday subject to availability (limited class sizes)

What do I need to get started?
To start your training you must:
- Have a current and valid drivers licence
- Decide if you want our vehicles or yours
- Bring a hat and sunscreen and
- Be fit to drive
